I’ve lots of memories involving fun and hard work; tap dance, acrobat and voice lessons. There were always exercises, costume fittings and memorizing to do.
Mom was truly a “Stage Mother” who kept me on the “path”. Actually, it was difficult to get me to rehearsals because she didn’t drive. So we spent hours traveling on buses to venues and lessons.
Singing classical music fit me very well. My love for ethnic music especially waltzes and festival dancing came naturally since my background is Hungarian. My family were members of The International Institute and yearly Oktoberfest were held at our church in Flint. Mother worked at the Institute as a cook, my sister worked on table decorations, my brother was a dancer and I danced and sang. Brother Juniper was the monk who taught the traditional dances, and our orchestra had all the proper instruments to produce the gypsy flavor.
Because of my involvement in classical music and being a participant in Flint Performing Arts I received a scholarship to Flint Community College and obtained an Associate Degree and continued studies in Business.
Performing roles and solos with community choruses and orchestras and with the Flint Civic Opera were highlights in my life. It was an honor to be elected President of Flint Civic Opera in 1956.
Volunteering for community functions and fundraisers was rewarding. Golden Landmarks Association, Easter Seal Camp Music Director, Civic Auctions, soup kitchens and visits to nursing homes had kept me busy.
However, now I occasionally offer my talents to entertain the folks at the Ashland Senior Center, just for the fun of it.
